Return to School Survey for Fall 2020
Background: Results of this survey will help the Office of Early Childhood staff, Training and Technical Assistance Centers, and partners at the University of Virginia’s Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning as they provide technical assistance to early childhood programs.
Who should complete the survey? VPI and ECSE coordinators should collaborate on survey responses. One of the coordinators will need to take responsibility for submission of the survey to VDOE Office of Early Childhood by September 4, 2020.

Please note that responses will reflect your understanding of EC program roll out in your division as of the date the survey is submitted. We understand that reopening plans continue to change and evolve.

- Full-day: at least 5 ½ hours of instruction provided five days a week
- Half-day: at least 3 hours of instruction provided five days a week
- Instructional Format: the way instruction will be offered. This could be remote instruction (see below), in-person instruction (in a brick and mortar facility), or a combination of the two.
- Remote Instruction: includes online or virtual instruction (synchronous and asynchronous), learning packets, activity boxes, software programs, parent/caregiver implementing activities provided by teacher, or remote one-on-one interactions
- VPI Classroom: any classroom that includes children, age 3 or 4, that are funded by VPI. For the purposes of this survey, focus on VPI classrooms that would be traditionally offered in a school based setting (e.g., not community-provider settings)
- ECSE Classroom (self-contained classrooms): a self-contained class taught by an Early Childhood Special Education teacher.
- Title I EC Classroom: For the purpose of this survey, a Title I early childhood classroom is a classroom for 3 – or 4 year-olds that does not include VPI-funded children.
- Head Start Classroom: any classroom with children that are funded by Head Start where the school division is the grantee
