River Pool at Beacon-Going Forward |
Dear Hudson Valley Community and Visitors,
We would like your opinion.
It has been ten years since launching the floating rainbow pool we call the River Pool. River Pool at Beacon Inc. is at an important decision making point. Along with the Board of Directors, you are River Pool-volunteers, families that use the river pool, cross river swimmers, sponsors, and engaged members of the community. The organization would like to remain open to your thoughts.
The circular pool, placed in the Hudson River off the north shore of Pete and Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park for the past 10 summer seasons, is a prototype to evaluate the environmental impact of a floating pool, design features, and interest by the community. This pool served us very well for those purposes, but all along the goal of founder Pete Seeger and River Pool at Beacon was for a larger and deeper pool that goes beyond wading, splashing, and minimal swimming accessibility. With funding from grants, the organization ordered hydrological surveys around Beacon, invested in development of a cost effective and sustainable design for a larger pool, and networked with other organizations for location of the next generation river pool. The water survey showed the current location of the river pool could only accommodate a larger perimeter pool of about the same depth.
Meanwhile, the existing rainbow river pool is approaching the end of its design life. We would like to move forward. Hence, in the interest of transparency, openness, and respect for River Pool’s stakeholders, we are requesting your thoughts and good sense.
Some options we've considered are:
----- Modifying the design of the next generation pool as larger than the rainbow pool, but the depth would be limited to about 30 inches or less, for it to remain near its current location.
----- Investigating other locations in the Hudson Valley
Would you kindly share your thoughts on the following questions?
