The AJC’s Nursing Leadership Excellence Award, sponsored by Mercer University, recognizes nurse leaders serving in an administrative capacity that demonstrate advocacy, vision, and collaboration to improve patient care and the nursing workplace. Nominees should hold a minimum of a BSN and should be presently employed as a nursing leader holding a Director level title or higher in a hospital or healthcare facility.

The Nursing Leadership Excellence Award is based on the premise that a nurse leader enhances the self-image of professional nursing, has a positive value orientation and promotes the professional development of self and others as evidenced by maintaining competence in nursing and responding to challenges with innovative approaches. 

AWARD CRITERIA: 
To be eligible, in addition to new BOLDED criteria listed below, the nominee must:
  • Be licensed in the state of GA.
  • Be employed in Metro Atlanta
  • Serve in a Nursing position with Director level or higher job title
  • Mentors and serves as role model
  • Inspires passion for clinical nursing
  • Encourages clinical expertise
  • Challenges students to expand their clinical knowledge base in new ways
  • Meets the ethical responsibilities of the nursing profession in keeping with the core values of caring, integrity, diversity, and excellence.
  • Improves the lives of those in need through selfless, courageous, creative, and compassionate acts
  • Embraces common moral decencies such as altruism, integrity, freedom, justice, honesty, truthfulness, responsibility, and compassion.
  • Respects and embraces human diversity.
  • Strong public advocacy and active leadership in support of quality health care for all; ethnic/ cultural/gender diversity; nurse workforce development or alle­viating the nurse faculty shortage.
  • Specific actions taken to advance health care policy and nursing education
  • Respected leader in nursing or health care.
  • Demonstrates commitment to nursing leadership.
  • Developing innovative approaches that contribute to the improvement of the quality of nursing care
  • Facilitating change
  • Participating in practice standard development and/or decision-making processes within their organization that influence positive outcomes for the patient (e.g. committee membership, policy and procedure design)

To be eligible, in addition to any criteria listed in the category descriptions, the nominee must be licensed in the state of GA, be employed in Metro Atlanta and serve in a nursing position with Director level or higher job title. Selection is based solely on the information submitted. The nomination form should be completed citing examples of the nominee’s qualifications. Excerpts from the nomination statements submitted will be read when the award is presented at the AJC’s annual Celebrating Nurses awards luncheon. The award recipient will be asked to submit a photo for recognition at the luncheon.
