Town of Porcupine Plain - Community Recreation Survey |
The Larwood-Shaw Memorial Swimming Pool opened on June 10, 1996. While an outdoor pool’s life expectancy is typically 20 years, residents of Porcupine Plain & Area enjoyed almost 23 years with our facility. However, in 2019, the pool closed due to structural damage. The Town of Porcupine Plain is now looking into several options to rebuild or reuse the facility and its location to its fullest potential.
To rebuild a swimming pool to meet required specifications for health and safety standards would cost approximately $1.5 million. While the LSMP Board spent years fundraising, even with the anticipated insurance coverage there is a significant shortfall in funding. As a result, the Town is faced with a decision on how best to renew or replace the damaged pool. It must consider doing so in a fiscally responsible manner that weighs the initial and continued investment to reconstruct and maintain a swimming pool versus constructing an affordable and sustainable facility, which would have the added benefit of encouraging greater use of the space available. One must realize that, even though the pool was managed exceptionally well, it operated at a deficit each summer, even before utilities, materials or maintenance costs were factored in.
The Town must consider the pros and cons of reconstructing a swimming pool versus transforming the facility into an Outdoor Oasis, which could include a splash park, skate park, playground and outdoor fitness equipment, picnic and farmers market shelter, and enhanced campgrounds with green space for the enjoyment of residents and visitors of all ages.
We invite residents of the Town of Porcupine Plain & Area to assist Council in creating a plan that is relevant and implementable for our community. Please take the time to complete this Survey -- your input is valuable to us!
