The use of artificial intelligence

About the context of this questionnaire
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) by newsrooms provides multiple challenges and opportunities for the news media industry. The Council of Europe Recommendation CM/Rec(2022)4 explicitly encourages media to seize the opportunities of AI systems, as it can improve the workflow, assist journalists in their research, and take over certain time-consuming and repetitive tasks, thereby freeing up valuable capacities for reporting and fact-finding. However, the use of AI also comes with significant risks that can impact newsroom revenues, staffing decisions, audience perceptions, as well as the reliability and quality of content produced.

For this reason, the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom at the European University Institute, in cooperation with the International Federation of Journalists, aims to assess the current state of AI use and AI risk-awareness in European newsrooms, which would inform future guidelines, policies and potentially support programs in the field of Journalism.

We therefore ask you to take some time to reflect on these questions, and help us with the research.

We tried to design the questionnaire in a way that doesn’t take too much of your time. Still, we decided against relying only on yes/no questions, as their added value would be minimal in this context. Please, as much as possible, share with us your own experiences and opinions in order to help us have a better understanding of the situation.
Disclaimer: In case you don’t have time to answer the questions in one go, be aware that the survey answers are automatically saved and respondents can return anytime until May 15th. While it may look like a lot of questions, many of them only require yes/no answers. (We need to go into this much detail, in order to better understand the problems and opportunities related to AI-use in the newsrooms)
Please be aware that the survey is available in multiple languages. In case you would like to change you language preferences, click on the button in the upper right corner (you can scroll down to see the full list of languages).
1.Are you a representative of a journalist association / union or a journalist / media worker? (if you’re both: in which capacity do you answer the questionnaire?)(Required.)
