The use of artificial intelligence (AI) by newsrooms provides multiple challenges and opportunities for the news media industry. The Council of Europe Recommendation CM/Rec(2022)4 explicitly encourages media to seize the opportunities of AI systems, as it can improve the workflow, assist journalists in their research, and take over certain time-consuming and repetitive tasks, thereby freeing up valuable capacities for reporting and fact-finding. However, the use of AI also comes with significant risks that can impact newsroom revenues, staffing decisions, audience perceptions, as well as the reliability and quality of content produced.
For this reason, the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom at the European University Institute, in cooperation with the International Federation of Journalists, aims to assess the current state of AI use and AI risk-awareness in European newsrooms, which would inform future guidelines, policies and potentially support programs in the field of Journalism.
We therefore ask you to take some time to reflect on these questions, and help us with the research.
We tried to design the questionnaire in a way that doesn’t take too much of your time. Still, we decided against relying only on yes/no questions, as their added value would be minimal in this context. Please, as much as possible, share with us your own experiences and opinions in order to help us have a better understanding of the situation.
