New Possible Feature: Automating QCD
Stewardship

Problem:
  • Donors are making QCDs on their own timelines -- some early in the year, some at tax time, some in December, and many whenever they feel like it.
  • Processes at all the key custodians are changing, and donors struggle to keep up with them.
  • New legislation can be confusing for donors and organizations alike.
Potential Solution: Automating QCD stewardship & recurring donations

  • For all QCD donors through the FreeWill tool AND those donors that an organization chooses to upload, FreeWill will automate email drip campaigns that are personally customized to that donor's annual timing AND their IRA custodian, giving them much-needed updates and reminders.
  • Example: A donor who made a QCD in May 2019 through Fidelity will receive specific messaging 8 weeks, 4 weeks, and 1 week  in advance of her previous gift date, as well as instructions on how to make a Fidelity QCD in 2020 (taking into account custodian and legislative changes.)

New Possible Feature: QCD video trainings for gift officers

Problem:
  • Gift officers report lacking a comprehensive understanding of QCDs, and are therefore both “leaving money on the table” and under-serving older donors because they cannot walk a donor through how and why to make a QCD.
  • New legislation has only added to the confusion.
Potential Solution: Warm and intuitive video trainings for gift officers
  • FreeWill may create short, easily digestible video trainings for gift officers on both the mechanics of Qualified Charitable Distributions and the best practices used to request them from donors.
  • These videos will come in 1-3 minute segments, and will be easily watchable from a mobile device while a gift officer is in transit.
  • The videos will be paired with quizzes, role-plays, and fact sheets to ensure rapid learnings

New Possible Feature: QCD Info & Donor form

Problem:
  • Many donors still make QCDs outside of the current FreeWill tool, and these gifts are subject to many challenges:
    • IRA custodian may not share donor information, meaning donors cannot be adequately thanked or given proper tax receipts
    • Donors are unable to direct gift to the fund or program of her choosing
    • Organizations are unable to steward these donors appropriately.
Potential Solution: New feature to capture the data of donors who need information on QCDs
  • In addition to walking donors through their custodian’s processes (the current tool), FreeWill will provide a pathway for donors who choose to use their financial advisor or other means to make a QCD. This pathway will:
    • Provide educational resources on the benefits of making a QCD
    • Require basic information from the donor: name, contact information, IRA custodian, and (optional) amount of QCD to ensure effective stewardship
  • When a donor solicits information about how to make a QCD the organization can link to this pathway to A) ensure that the donor has the latest and most accurate information for their gift, and B) ensure that the organization will be able to track the gift going forward.

New Possible Feature: Electronic Signatures for some Custodians

Problem: QCDs still require a donor to print and mail a form, adding friction to the process

Solution: For some custodians (about 25%), there may be an option for donors to sign electronically and automatically submit the request without the donor needing to print and mail their request.

New Possible Tool: Quarterly Legislative & Trend Updates

Problem: Congress and the IRS are regularly shifting requirements around IRA giving, and many organizations are struggling to keep up. In addition, because QCD giving is relatively new, organizations do not understand how other organizations are doing in this field.

Solution: Quarterly email updates on legislation, trends, and overall data around QCD giving.
