Background
The AAP Council on Community Pediatrics invites nominations for the 2024 Local Hero Award. This award recognizes pediatricians, including early career pediatricians, who lead community action and advocacy for children in local communities. This award is presented to individuals who epitomize the "community pediatrician” and is presented to two pediatricians annually.

Award recipients will be acknowledged in the AAP News and will receive an honorarium and award.

Award Criteria
This award recognizes pediatricians, including early career pediatricians, who lead community action and advocacy for children in local communities who does several of the following:
  • Promotes child health within all environments such as the community, school, and family
  • Collaborates with community partners to address population-based child health issues and promote health equity
  • Advocates for children who lack access to health care and other resources
  • Implements public health approaches to advance the health of all children in the community
Award Eligibility
  • A nominee must be a pediatrician, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a resident of the United States or Canada.
  • Nominees are not required to be members of the Council on Community Pediatrics; however, preference is given to Council members.
  • Members of the Council on Community Pediatrics Executive Committee and the AAP Board of Directors are not eligible to receive this award during their term of service.
  • Deceased persons are not eligible for awards.
  • An individual may only receive one Council on Community Pediatrics award per year.
