Background
The AAP Council on Community Pediatrics invites nominations for the 2024 AAP Job Lewis Smith Award recognizing lifelong outstanding career achievement in community pediatrics. The award is named by Job Lewis Smith, MD, one of the founding fathers of the American Pediatric Society and chief pioneer of American pediatrics.

Award recipient will be acknowledged in the AAP News and will receive an honorarium and award.

Award Criteria
The award recognizes a pediatrician with a history of significant career achievements in community pediatrics. Nominees will have a demonstrated history of achievements in one or more of the following areas: community pediatrics practice, research, advocacy, and/or training.

Prior award recipients have been recognized for a range of career accomplishments including:
  • Providing outstanding care to underserved communities and working to reduce health disparities
  • Building innovative partnerships and/or programs with community organizations that improve the health of children in the context of the community
  • Advocating at the local, state, and federal levels for underserved and vulnerable communities
  • Advancing education and training on community pediatrics issues, including social determinants of health and health disparities
Award Eligibility
  • Nominee must be a pediatrician, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a resident of the United States or Canada.
  • Nominees are not required to be members of the Council on Community Pediatrics; however, preference is given to Council members.
  • Members of the Council on Community Pediatrics Executive Committee and the AAP Board of Directors are not eligible to receive this award during their term of service.
  • Deceased persons are not eligible for awards.
  • An individual may only receive one Council on Community Pediatrics award per year.
