Reacting to an increasing shift towards urbanization, the Jeddah Municipality is tackling the challenges associated with an underdeveloped yet dense urban region. Despite suffering a massive flood damage in 2010, the area has quickly rebuilt and re-populated, but has now undertaken more careful and strategic planning in designing its new urban sprawl.
The primary objectives of the initiatives are:
- Improve interconnectivity between regions within Jeddah Municipality through investment in a public transit infrastructure, including the strategic placements of metro stations;
- Capitalize on available land to create mixed-use town centers defining the city's character and;
- Integrate essential stormwater drainage systems to protect against future flooding.
Through careful planning and implementation, the project will deliver a vibrant urban landscape that will benefit Jeddah's residents by giving them better access to amenities, critical resources and jobs. This project is on a huge scale and involves an unprecedented number of stakeholders to consult, critique and reach consensus on a new path forward for Jeddah.
