Plymouth's Tudor Wreck: archaeology, exploration and analysis of the Cattewater Wreck

The Cattewater Wreck was discovered during dredging in 1973 and became the first wreck to be Protected by the UK Government. Excavations in the 1970's showed that the wreck was an armed merchantman dating to the early Tudor period. More recently, students from Plymouth University have used the latest techniques in underwater survey to examine the site without any further digging. English Heritage have also funded the examination of the original excavation archive from the 1970's in Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery which has lead onto further research being carried using some of the latest archaeological and scientific techniques. This talk will look at several aspects of this important maritime site including its discovery & protection, excavation, exploration and scientific research.

The event is supported by the School of Marine Science and Engineering and the Centre for Marine and Coastal Policy Research (MarCoPol), both Plymouth University, and the Plymouth and District Archaeological Society.
