AN EXPLORATION OF PATIENT EXPERIENCE IN ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Introduction

The Beryl Institute has established the Academic Consortium on Patient Experience for the purpose of creating a common knowledge and understanding around the topic of Patient Experience (PX) in healthcare academia.

This inquiry is designed to collect baseline information about what is happening today in terms of engaging the PX conversation in education: what is being taught, where it is being taught, and how it is being taught. These data will help frame the work of the consortium moving forward as it looks at opportunities for establishing and supporting a common and interdisciplinary standard set for PX education across disciplines.

For context we view patient experience through the lens of The Beryl Institute's community definition of patient experience - the sum of all interactions, shaped by an organization's culture, that influence patient perceptions across the continuum of care. We believe that provides the breadth of what the topic can encompass.

For guidance we ask that you think of patient experience from that broad perspective and consider it could cover topics such as patient satisfaction and measurement methodology, quality and safety, patient and family engagement/centeredness, equity and access, value-based care, environments of care, etc. We cast the net broad to see what you may associate with this topic from an academic perspective as well.

We will be sharing the full results in a report for all participants as we assess the patient experience education landscape. We appreciate you taking a few minutes to respond.
