Section one: survey details

The Chilterns is one of 34 National Landscapes in England and Wales. All are required to prepare a management plan which formulates their policy for the management of the landscape and their functions in relation to it.

The plan is written for all those who live, work, visit or have an interest in the future of the Chilterns and is the only plan for the whole of the Chilterns National Landscape. It contains a summary of issues facing the area and will influence and help co-ordinate other strategies and activities across local authority boundaries, including development plans and local nature recovery strategies.

The Chilterns Conservation Board (CCB) is responsible for preparing the plan for the Chilterns. The plan usually runs for five years, but the current management plan was extended by a year to the end of March 2025 on the direction of the Secretary of State.

The CCB considers that much of the content of the current plan continues to represent aspirations for the conservation and enhancement of the National Landscape and was based on detailed evidence and community engagement, all of which remains valid. In addition, Natural England are currently reviewing the boundary of the National Landscape, which will require a whole new plan. As a result, the CCB is proposing changes to the current plan, limited to branding changes, progress updates, changes in law and policy, and an increased focus on nature recovery, climate adaptation, and diversity and inclusion. We welcome your views on these proposed changes.
