Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback on your practice as a doula or perinatal community health worker (PCHW) in Maryland and thoughts on expanding Maryland’s Medicaid program to cover the care that you provide. This survey was created by the Reproductive Health Equity Alliance of Maryland (RHEAM). Our mission is to reduce pregnancy and infant health disparities in Maryland’s Black, Brown and immigrant communities by advocating for evidence-based legislative and policy solutions that expand access to quality reproductive, pregnancy and infant health options designed to build healthy and stable families of color. We are led and guided by directly impacted people of color who are actively engaged in providing community-based programs that support pregnancy and reproductive health of communities of color and amplify their voices. Research and accounts from patients with lived experience have shown that doulas and PCHWs improve maternal and child health outcomes and reduce the impact of racial bias and disparities in the healthcare system. By expanding Medicaid to cover this type of care, our goal is to increase the accessibility of doulas and PCHWs to low-income people, particularly low-income people of color.

The purpose of this survey is to collect data about doulas, PCHWs and the services they provide so that RHEAM can better advocate for your needs and the needs of the people that you serve. In order to participate in the survey, you must have experience supporting or working with families in Maryland; you do not, however, need to be a Maryland resident. We believe it is essential that those who are trying to support doulas and PCHWs are accurately representing their services, wants, and concerns. That said, we understand that there is no “one” type of doula and PCHW or “one” type of doula and PCHW experience; it is likely that there will be contrasting opinions on issues.

We expect the survey to take 15 - 20 minutes. While we know everyone is incredibly busy, we urge you to answer all questions to the best of your ability so that your voice and experiences may be heard in this process. This is an anonymous survey. To the extent that we share or publish any of the responses, names and identifying information will be removed.
