Introduction

CONSENT TO PARTICIPATE IN A RESEARCH PROJECT

You are being invited to participate in a web-based online survey because you are a professional working in a museum and/or have participated in a leadership development program. The study is conducted under the direction of Julie I. Johnson, Bank Street College.  The purpose is to 1) learn about how museum professionals think about leadership and leadership development and 2) understand the experiences of professionals in applying knowledge and skills from leader development experiences to the workplace. The information gained from this study could help inform the assessment of current leadership development efforts in the museum field as well as spawn new ideas.

Procedures:  The survey should take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

Risks and Right to Refuse: This survey will give you an opportunity to reflect on your professional work experiences, how you learn in the workplace, your perceptions of leadership and leader development, and to add your voice to an analysis of these topics in the museum industry. Your participation is voluntary and you may opt out of the survey at any time by exiting the survey.

Benefits: There are no direct benefits. However, participating in this research may afford you the opportunity to reflect your museum practice. You might also gain new insights into your and others’ behavior around leadership.

Voluntary Participation: Your participation in this study is voluntary, and you may decide not to participate without prejudice, penalty, or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. If you decide to leave the study, simply click on the ‘Exit Survey’ button located in the upper right corner of the survey.

Confidentiality: I will do my best to keep your information confidential. All data is stored in a password protected electronic format. To help protect your confidentiality, the surveys will not contain information that will personally identify you. The results of this study will be used for scholarly purposes only and may be shared with the IRRB of Bank Street College or incorporated into larger national datasets focused on the same topic. No one will know whether or not you participated in the study. After seven years, the data collected will be destroyed. Digital data will be deleted and paper data or artifacts will be shredded.

Security of the data you share:  SurveyMonkey stores the survey data on secure servers. They take many precautions to ensure the data is safe (https://www.surveymonkey.com/mp/policy/security/).  Unfortunately, no method of Internet transmission or storage is perfectly secure; therefore, I cannot guarantee absolute security. I have made sure the survey is configured with SSL/TLS encryption, the industry standard for Internet security.
