Background and Survey Purpose

The 2020-2024 Science Work Plan (SWP) will be an integral part of Puget Sound recovery, articulating priority science recommendations for restoring and protecting Puget Sound over the next four years. The Science Panel is collecting input for the SWP from a broad range of sources and has invited PSEMP to provide input on specific monitoring recommendations and program improvements to build upon existing work and fill gaps in existing knowledge.

In response, at its November 2019 meeting, the PSEMP Steering Committee established an SWP Subgroup for developing the requested input from the PSEMP community. The Subgroup performed a highly cursory review of a wide array of key sources and identified initial proposed themes or categories of monitoring needs and priorities that could be put forward to the Science Panel for inclusion in the 2020-2024 SWP. The Subgroup presented their initial findings to the full Steering Committee at its January 2020 meeting, and then revised and expanded upon these themes and categories based on input received at that meeting.

The purpose of this survey is to build upon and more broadly vet within the PSEMP community the initial proposed themes and categories of monitoring needs and priorities developed by the Subgroup. The Subgroup will analyze and integrate the results of this survey into PSEMP’s formal input to the Science Panel’s process for developing the 2020-2024 SWP.  The Science Panel will be the final decision-maker on what is included in the Science Work Plan.

The Science Panel has requested PSEMP’s input by early March. For this reason, we have established a stretch goal for completing this survey of February 21, 2020. For those who are unable to make this stretch goal, we will accept survey responses through February 28, 2020

The PSEMP Subgroup will present analyzed survey results and proposed integrated PSEMP input to Science Workplan at the March 10, 2020 meeting of the full PSEMP Steering Committee. The PSEMP Subgroup will then present our input to the Science Panel at its March 11-12, 2020 meeting.

This survey asks you for your feedback on the draft criteria, categories of recommendations, and priority recommendations identified so far – and equally importantly, to share any elements that have been overlooked.
