What is primary care?

The term primary care means different things to different people.  Generally speaking, it is most people's first contact with health services. It includes, amongst other things, services provided by GPs, advanced nurse practitioners, practice nurses, district nurses, pharmacists and support staff.

Primary health care involves providing treatment for common illnesses, the management of long term illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease and the prevention of future ill-health through advice, immunisation and screening programmes.

This questionnaire is not about opticians and dental services.
