ASE International Science Teacher recruitment and retention.

1. About this research
The main aim of the research is to understand the extent and characteristics of international science teachers in state-funded secondary schools in England. Specifically, it seeks to:
- Quantify the number of international trainee and qualified science teachers (with non-settled status) in the system;
- Characterise trainees and teachers in terms of demographics, training pathways, and the schools they are working in; and
- Identify gaps in support provided, which can inform targeted interventions to improve their recruitment, retention, and professional development.
The aim of this survey is to understand more about the international trainees entering the system. This survey is aimed at anyone who is involved in science initial teacher education, and covers the current cohort (2024-2025, as well as the previous cohort 2023-2024, and upcoming cohort 2025-2026).
This survey invites your institution to submit numbers of international trainee teachers from the last three years of intake, within the EEA, and separately international trainee teachers (non-EEA) each for biology, chemistry and physics. Please work with colleagues to compile the required information. Once this data is to hand, the survey should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete. Responses can be saved at any time before submission. The link will work for more than one respondent from each institution. Please ensure that all colleagues submit the same numbers before completing other sections of the survey.
All data collected remains anonymous and confidential. ASE will share key findings from this survey with the Gatsby Foundation, the Department for Education and partner organisations for this project. At the end of the survey, there is an opportunity to be further involved by joining our focus group discussions.
