Criteria for Selection

All applications are subject to confidential evaluation. Cohort members must live or work in Etowah County. Those persons will be selected each year who are most apt to utilize their leadership ability for the long-term benefit of the community and whose inclusion in that year’s cohort furthers the objective of the program to bring together persons with disparate backgrounds and interests. Persons will be favored for selection who:
  • Demonstrated desire to serve the community through past civic activities.
  • Willing to seek leadership roles on public and private boards, in volunteer organizations, or in public office
  • Motivated to improve skill set
  • Have the potential for advancement to leadership positions in their own organization, or already in a leadership position.
  • Have an occupation in which they will not likely be relocating from the county in the immediate future.
  • Commit to participate fully, meet attendance requirements, and as alumni continue for at least one year their involvement with the program as resource persons, program planners, Board Members or other roles as needed.
  • Submit a headshot photo for the website if selected.
Attendance Policy

Professional Leadership Academy is designed as a total experience in which a cohort member attends a half-day session for five months. A different topic is addressed at each session. To receive the benefits the program intends, a cohort member should attend all sessions. Therefore, the Professional Leadership Academy policy on attendance is as follows:
  1. A cohort member should attend all monthly sessions. A cohort member missing more than one session without an acceptable excuse will be dropped from the cohort, without a tuition refund, and may reapply for the next year’s cohort. Classes begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. Participants must arrive on time.
  2. A cohort member missing a session will not be eligible for graduation.
