Telehealth is a rapidly changing area of practice. Our statement on Telehealth was last reviewed in 2020 and the focus at that time was on changes to facilitate prescribing in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The current review is more comprehensive and aims to ensure our statement remains fit for purpose and is enabling.

We are proposing amendments to reflect changing models of care and situations on the ground where patients may not have a GP or be able to access primary care. Underpinning the statement is our expectation that treatment provided to a patient by telehealth should be equivalent to the care provided by an in-person consultation, within the limitations of the telehealth platform. A new section about the doctor’s responsibility to facilitate continuity of care has been added.

The consultation closes on 12 June 2023.
