The South Dakota state standards are reviewed on a cycle approved by the State Board of Education as per SD codified law 13-3-48.  The core content standards are reviewed every seven years.  The current SD standards for World Language were adopted in July of 2011.  This means, it is time to begin the process of reviewing standards in preparation for public hearings.

The review process allows educators and stakeholders to analyze what is working or identify challenges and propose revisions.  The state remains committed to high expectations aligned to college and career readiness, therefore the review process will consist of the following steps:

-        Summer 2017:   Complete initial review and draft any edits
-        School Year 2017-2018:  Gather feedback from non-work group educators
-        Summer 2018:  Review feedback and make final edits
-        School Year 2018-2019:  State Board of Education will conduct four public hearings

The state is soliciting 25-30 committee members comprised of k-12 educators, post-secondary educators, administrators or curriculum directors, parents, and business/industry partners to review k-12 world language  standards.  Applications will be taken through March 15, 2017.

Work-group members will be reimbursed for travel expenses and paid for work completed.   Work group members must participate in the following meetings in Pierre, SD;

·        June 13 - 15, 2017  (3 day work session)
·        June 21, 2017  (may be canceled if work is completed in first session)
