CONSENT BY PARTICIPANT FOR PARTICIPATION IN A RESEARCH PROJECT

Title: Personality and Online Communities
Principal Investigator: Ruth Grant

The purpose of this study is to explore how personality manifests itself in online communities. Participation in this study entails designing and dressing a Second Life avatar, e-mailing the investigator pictures of your avatar, and answering questions about your avatar and 2 short personality questionnaires.

Participation in this study is entirely voluntary and you may refuse to participate, or may decide to cease participation once begun. Should you withdraw from the study or refuse to participate in the study, your decision will involve no penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.

This research will help the investigator explore how personality manifests itself in online communities. There are no physical or psychological risks associated with participation in this research. If you choose to participate, your e-mail address will be entered into a drawing for a fifty-dollar gift card to Target. The drawing will take place on June 1, 2010. The winner will be notified via e-mail.

Every effort will be made to maintain the confidentiality of your responses. The data collected from this study will be used for educational and publication purposes; however, you will not be identified as a participant.
