As of January 1, 2023, all to-go containers for food and beverages on Bainbridge Island must be home compostable. The City defines home compostable as:
  • Natural fiber based and/or able to break down or otherwise become part of usable compost in a safe and a timely manner in a nonindustrial composting environment, AND
  • Certified to be free of intentionally added fluorinated chemicals, AND
  • Certified by BPI, CMA or another City-approved 3rd party.

If you have identified a product that is made of natural fibers and free of all intentionally added fluorinated chemicals that is certified by an organization other than BPI, CMA or OK Compost HOME, you can submit a request for City review of that product to see if it meets our home compostable standard.  City staff will review and respond to requests within 30 days.

Please contact Hannah Ljunggren, Climate Action Outreach Coordinator, at hljunggren@bainbridgewa.gov or 206-780-8594 with any questions.

Please complete all requested information below. Incomplete forms will be returned with a request for additional information and will delay review.
