The WHO unanimously approved at the 2023 World Health Assembly (WHA) the 76.2 Resolution: Integrated Emergency, Critical and Operative Care for Universal Health Coverage and protection from Health emergencies (ECO Resolution) and in 2024 a decision unanimously passed by the WHA77 calling countries to implement an ECO Action Plan.
To meet this mandate, the WHO Acute Care Action Network (ACAN) initiative started as a global alliance of key stakeholders committed to advancing acute care through collaboration to saving millions of lives by strengthening acute care delivery in LMICs through dissemination, implementation and evaluation of WHO tools and resources. WFSA has been involved as one of the main stakeholders in this initiative, because Anaesthesiologists are essential to safe, scalable, and equitable health systems, not just in operating rooms, but across the ECO continuum of care.
