HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system — the part of the body that fights off infections and illness. Without treatment, HIV can weaken the immune system over time until the body struggles to defend itself against diseases that a healthy immune system would normally handle. Antiretroviral therapy, or ART, is a daily medication that keeps HIV under control by stopping the virus from making copies of itself in the body. When someone takes their HIV medication consistently, the amount of virus in their blood drops to very low levels — this is measured by a test called a viral load. When the viral load becomes so low that standard tests cannot detect it, a person is said to be "undetectable," which means their treatment is working well and their immune system is protected. People who are undetectable and stay on their medication can live long, healthy lives — and cannot pass HIV on to their sexual partners.
