Every year, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) funds research projects that inform the state’s long-term strategies to achieve its air pollution and climate change goals, while ensuring co-benefits for the economy and health in all communities.  CARB is initiating its fiscal year 2021-2022 research planning process by soliciting research concepts from the general public. This is an opportunity to suggest multi-disciplinary approaches to assess progress and holistically address the challenges of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and exposure to harmful air pollutants, especially to California’s most vulnerable populations.  Successful research projects should address questions in a comprehensive fashion that ensures protection for all California communities.

Only concepts that clearly demonstrate policy relevance to CARB will be considered. Please review CARB's current research priorities before submitting your concept.  Detailed descriptions of these priorities and descriptions of previously funded research projects can be found in the Triennial Research Plan for Fiscal Years 2018-2021 (https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/sites/default/files/2019-03/research_plan_2018-2021_FINALweb.pdf).

Concepts must be submitted by June 22, 2020, 5:00 pm, PST. Concepts submitted after this deadline will be considered for the next fiscal year.  Any individual is allowed to submit more than one concept.

Submissions consist of a title and a brief (2000 characters or less, including spaces) description of your research concept.  The description should be in one paragraph.  Do not include paragraph returns in your submission.

The submission should include a clearly stated research objective, brief description of methods that would be employed, what the final product or deliverable of the research would be, and why this concept is relevant to CARB’s policies and/or programs. Information on time and funding needed to conduct the research is helpful but not required.

For questions regarding the concepts, contact Sarah Pittiglio at sarah.pittiglio@arb.ca.gov. For more information on our research planning process, visit our Research Planning webpage (https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/our-work/topics/research).
