Gisborne District Council agreed on 23 February 2017 to research, consult and apply to the NZ Geographic Board (NZGB) for a change to the name of Poverty Bay.
The basis of the application is to reclaim the official use of Turanganui a Kiwa to be used alongside Poverty Bay.
The process to officially change a place name is an application to the NZ Geographic Board which includes research and consultation. Once the application is received by NZGB they also undertake a statutory consultation period before making a decision.
We want to find out the level of support for this.
