Opioid Agonist Therapy for the Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder

CONSULTATION SURVEY

Introduction

The Council of the College has approved in principle changes to the following documents:

  • Regulatory Bylaw 19.1 “Prescribing of Methadone for Opioid Use Disorder’ (markup).
  • Regulatory Bylaw 19.1 “Prescribing of Methadone for Opioid Use Disorder” (clean copy).
  • Policy “Prescribing: Maintaining Methadone for the Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder”.
  • Policy “Prescribing: Initiating Methadone for the Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder”.
  • Standard “Prescribing: Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT) for the Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD)”.
  • Guideline “Prescribing: Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT) for the Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD)”.
Since the changes were substantive, the Council decided that it was important to seek feedback and directed that the proposed documents be circulated to registrants, health care organizations and the public to seek feedback.

Background

The proposed amendments reflect a shift toward a modernized Opioid Agonist Therapy framework that emphasizes timely access to treatment, reduced barriers to care, patient safety, continuity of care, and alignment with current addiction medicine practices. The amendments are intended to maintain appropriate regulatory oversight while supporting patient-centred care and consistent prescribing practices across Saskatchewan.

Consultation Request

The Council anticipates that it will consider feedback from stakeholders, including members of the profession, at its meeting on Friday, November 27, 2026. The Council would like to hear from you! If you have concerns with the proposed amended documents, it would be helpful if you explain the reasons for those concerns.
