Example(s) of Decision-Making by Physicians Prior to Prescribing Medications

Nearly 70% of individuals with a mental health diagnosis (including substance use disorder) also have at least one additional medical condition (more likely many), including chronic health conditions. Long before a physician (psychiatrist, family physician and pediatrician) considers whether or not a patient's symptoms could be alleviated by prescribing a medication to treat a mental health condition, he or she must consider the patient's overall health history as well as how certain medications will interact with medications for co-occurring medical conditions.

* 1. Please share one or more case examples of why psychologists, without appropriate medical training should not be permitted to prescribe powerful psychotropic medications or opioid antagonists to some of Ohio's most medically complex citizens.
