Musculoskeletal disorders affect a third of the U.S. population and are among the most prevalent, costly and debilitating medical conditions. (U.S. Bone and Joint Initiative, 2014.) Chronic musculoskeletal disorders comprise between 20% and 40% of primary care office visits and overall health care expenditures, (Benham & Geier, 2014) yet many primary care providers receive fewer than 10 hours of orthopedic content in their educational programs.
JOF's OPC Course Contents
Orthopedic Primary Care (OPC) is a comprehensive 250 CEU-course that prepares clinicians to diagnose and manage common orthopedic conditions in primary care settings. OPC emphasizes non-surgical, patient-centered approaches to:
maximizing function
managing pain
preventing injury
and slowing disease progression.
Since 2013 OPC has been available to a limited number of students each year in Oakland, California. The course is currently presented over six months in a hybrid format with six hours of online learning per week plus six 2-day weekend skills workshops. The weekend workshops provide time for supervised practice of:
exam techniques
radiology interpretation
splinting and casting
joint injections
and prescription of exercise and assistive devices.
Survey Rationale
Given continuing interest from NPs everywhere and the positive feedback from our students - not to mention objective evidence of improvement in their confidence and skills - we're exploring new ways to make the OPC course available to more Nurse Practitioners in ways that will best meet their learning preferences, schedules, and budgets.
By completing this survey you can help design new OPC formats that will work for YOU. If you answer EVERY question and provide your contact information in the last one, you will be entered in a drawing for a chance to win a $100 Amazon gift card in appreciation of your time and effort.
