Gerontology Acceleration Programme (GAP) - 2018-19

This survey seeks your expression of interest in your organisation participating in the Gerontology Acceleration Programme (GAP) for the 2018/2019 year.

The GAP is a professional development programme for Registered Nurses (RNs) caring for older people in different settings across our health system. The 12 month programme combines the following:
-          Clinical rotation between two different practice areas (12 week rotations each)
-          Postgraduate study in gerontology nursing with HWNZ funding
-          Senior nurse individualised mentorship
-          Completion of a portfolio at Proficient level on a Nursing Council endorsed Professional Development Recognition Programme (PDRP)
-          Supported consolidation of learning during third rotation in ‘home’ clinical setting

The programme supports an integrated 'whole of system' understanding, and provides opportunities to develop knowledge and skills, while reducing professional isolation.

It is expected that RNs will develop their clinical, communication and leadership skills in working with older people, their families, and multidisciplinary teams involved with their care, restoration and/or rehabilitation.

The GAP was successfully offered in 2013 and 2014 and was the subject of an independent evaluation commissioned by the Office of the Chief Nurse, Ministry of Health  (Click here for report published on Ministry of Health website). The evaluation found the programme to have had a positive impact on the nurses involved both personally and professionally, as well as having a positive impact on their workplaces and the wider sector with improved collaboration and networking across services. The programme so far has involved RNs working in aged residential care, Older Persons Health inpatient services including Older Persons Mental Health, general medicine at Chch Hospital, and Ashburton Hospital.

After being on hold for 2015 and 2016  pending the move of Older Persons Health & Rehab inpatient services to Burwood Hospital, The GAP was successfully recommenced in 2017 and we are now seeking applications for the GAP due to commence mid 2018.
