Our Education Programme

Orangutan Appeal UK is a registered charity that helps to raise awareness of the plight of the orangutan, and provides funding and support to projects that protect Bornean orangutans and their habitat. We grew out of the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and one of our main fundraising strategies is an adoption scheme, where people sponsor an orphaned orangutan currently on SORC's rehabilitation programme.

We are trying to create an educational programme for UK primary schools that will teach children about orangutans and the rainforests in Borneo, and will help to foster an interest in wildlife conservation in general. This questionnaire is designed to help us guage what will be most useful to UK primary school teachers, in order to help us design effective teaching resources. We hope to get an idea about the facilities available in UK schools and how much freedom teachers really have in planning lessons. We also ask for your feedback on the ideas that we have for the educational project as they stand at this stage, and for tips on how to attract interest from teachers.

Thank you so much for taking your time and help us!

Question Title

* 13. We are planning to make one or two lesson plans for each year group, targeting a specific area of the National Curriculum. Unfortunately, we do not have funds to go from school to school giving classes so we plan to provide teachers with everything they need to teach a full, engaging lesson. Do you think this is something that teachers would be interested in?

Question Title

* 14. Do you think teachers would prefer a lesson that they could download and print off, or a teaching kit with high quality materials that could be posted to the school and later returned to the charity?

Question Title

Question Title

* 16. The class would then be asked to fundraise in order to adopt an orphaned orangutan currently on the rehabilitation programme at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. They would be asked to raise a minimum of £50 and would receive a special school adoption pack, including a class certificate, a poster of their chosen orangutan and updates which would arrive before the end of the school year. Do you think this is something that teachers and students would be willing to do?
