Introduction to the survey
The biological status of Common Muskrat was assessed by the NWT Species at Risk Committee in April 2026 using information based in Indigenous knowledge, community knowledge and science. The Committee recommended this species be listed as Special Concern due to observed declines in muskrat abundance and adverse impacts to muskrat habitat, which are linked to these declines.
‘Special Concern' means a species is at risk of becoming Threatened or Endangered because of a combination of biological characteristics and identified threats.
The objective of this survey is to gather public feedback on the proposed listing of Common Muskrat as a species of Special Concern in the NWT.
Comments are due by November 15, 2026.
