Introduction

Background:
Deep-sea genetic resources, including questions of access and benefit sharing, are key issues for the development of a new international legal instrument for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Deep-sea scientific research is the main activity accessing and using genetic resources in ABNJ.

Purpose:
This questionnaire has been prepared by the DOSI Deep-Sea Genetic Resources (DSGR) Working Group. It seeks to collect opinions from deep-sea scientific researchers on the governance of deep-sea genetic resources in ABNJ and covers three themes:

1.     How should deep-sea genetic resources in ABNJ be accessed?

2.     How should benefits from the use of deep-sea genetic resources in ABNJ be shared?

3.     How can deep-sea research be facilitated?

The outcomes of this survey will:

1.     Contribute to an open letter from the DOSI DSGR Working Group outlining opportunities and challenges for deep-sea scientific research relating to marine genetic resources in ABNJ, to be sent to the first Preparatory Committee meeting for the development of a new legal instrument for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity ABNJ under UNCLOS (March 2016).

2.     Inform future activity planning for the DOSI DSGR Working Group.

This questionnaire should take 10 minutes to complete. Thank you in advance for participating.
