This course provides a foundational overview of the core concepts, functions, and practices that underpin professional regulation in Canada. It introduces participants to how regulators operate in the public interest and explores the shared principles that guide effective regulation across jurisdictions and professions.

This course is designed to introduce participants to the foundational principles, core functions, and current landscape of professional regulation in Canada. Registrants will:

- Acquire knowledge and understanding of the fundamental concepts and core functions of regulators in Canada, and what it means and looks like to regulate a profession in the public interest.
- Become familiar with key issues and emerging trends shaping professional regulation in Canada.
Course Outline:
Unit 1: Regulator’s Mandate – Serving and Protecting the Public Interest
Unit 2: Regulatory Governance
Unit 3: Quality Practice – Assuring Entry and Continuing Competence
Unit 4: Professional Conduct – Complaints, Investigations, Discipline, and Fitness to Practice
Unit 5: Regulator’s Voice – Communications, Relationships, and Engagement
Course Delivery:
The course is delivered fully online through a blend of asynchronous and synchronous learning activities. The 5 units are delivered over a period of 5 weeks, one unit covered per week.
Participants engage in 4-5 guided learning hours each week, via:

- 1-2 hours of pre-session activities at their own pace as an introduction to the course topics
- a 2 hour instructor-led session that brings the group together for collaborative learning and discussion.
- 1-2 hours of post-session activities including contributing to an online discussion forum to deepen understanding and connect theory to professional practice.
Cohorts:
We anticipate 2 cohorts within the first year. The first delivery of this course will be in April-May 2026, followed by a second cohort in October-November 2026.

- Confidently deliver a 2-hour live session that engages participants and supports their learning.
- Actively review and contribute to discussion forum posts, helping to guide conversations, answer questions, and maintain a supportive learning environment.
- Support the CNAR Learning Specialist in monitoring learner attendance, tracking course activity completion, and ensuring participants remain on pace.
There are no assessments or engagement activities that require marking.
Course instructors will also be expected to participate in instructor orientation and become familiar with course materials and content.
Closing dates:

Future Cohorts – Expressions of interest can be submitted at any time using the same link.
Priority will be given to applications for the April-May cohort.
