CPhA Quick Poll - November 2024

Pet medications in pharmacies

On October 30, 2024, the Competition Bureau of Canada released a report on the market for pet medication in Canada that states a lack of competition is contributing to higher prices and fewer options for consumers. According to the report, “exclusive distribution” practices are limiting access to veterinary clinics and restricting access for pharmacies that could play a role in filling the veterinary-prescribed prescriptions. The Competition Bureau makes one recommendation: that provinces and territories consider mandating the supply of pet medications to pharmacists to create opportunities for them to compete.
