Presentation Overview and Instructions

The theme for this year’s Coalition Conference is "CHAMPS (supporting coalitions to be champions in Collaboration, Health, Advocacy, Mobilization, Perception, and Sustainability)"

The Michigan SUD Coalitions Conference is for people leading, staffing, and volunteering with substance use disorder prevention coalitions across multiple fields. Prevention professionals, public health professionals, social workers, educators, faith-based leaders, youth leaders, policymakers, law enforcement, and all those working collaboratively within coalitions to end substance misuse will benefit from this conference.

Workshops will be 75 minutes (60 minute presentation with 15 minute Q&A).

1. Complete this form by February 26, 2025.
2. This form provides an overview of the planned presentation. The presenter(s) will need to email the final presentation by June 2, 2025, for review prior to the conference session.
3. Proposals will be reviewed by the coalition conference planning committee which will select proposals based on conference objectives and overall presentation content.

Presentations that fit within the general theme of the conference
The theme for this year’s Coalition Conference is "CHAMPS (supporting coalitions to be champions in Collaboration, Health Equity, Advocacy, Mobilization, Perception, and Sustainability)"

Collaboration - mutually beneficial and well-defined relationships that exist for the purpose of achieving a common goal. Topics that fit within collaboration include:
  • Strategic collaboration across coalitions
  • Logic Model Development
  • Community needs assessments
  • Capacity building
  • Coalition models (Ex: Communities That Care/Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol)
Health - The state in which everyone has a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health (CDC, 2024). Topics that fit within health equity include:
  • Health in prevention
  • Cultural humility in coalition building
  • Prevention Science for all
  • ACEs and Risks and Protective Factors
  • Incorporating harm reduction in prevention strategies (data shows there are significant gaps in how harm reduction supports Hispanic populations and African-Americans)
  • Social Determinants of Health
  • Using CLAS standards within coalition work
Advocacy - The act of working to remove barriers to community health and promote policies that reduce substance misuse. Topics that fit within advocacy include:
  • Coalitions leveraging partnerships with government
  • Advocacy and policy
  • Youth advocacy and engagement
  • Emerging drug trends and updates
Mobilization - The process of bringing together as many stakeholders as possible to raise people's awareness of and demand for a particular program, to assist in the delivery of resources and services, and to strengthen community participation for sustainability and self-reliance (World Health Organization, 2010). Topics that fit within mobilization include:
  • Facilitating focus groups, listening sessions, and town halls for community engagement
  • Family engagement in prevention efforts
  • Evidence-Based Strategies
  • Utilizing public spaces for prevention
  • Prevention and placemaking
Perception - The lens through which individuals/groups interpret and make sense of the community. Topics that fit within perception include:
  • Marketing
  • Communication
  • Sharing the stories behind the data
  • Media campaigns
Sustainability - Achieve and maintain long-term results (SAMHSA, 2019). Topics that fit within sustainability include:
  • Securing funding with grant writing
  • Sustainability planning
  • Identifying and establishing creative funding streams
  • Coalition Evaluation tools
  • Data collection
