2015 NM Breastfeeding Advocacy Priorities Survey

The New Mexico Breastfeeding Task Force is conducting a survey about our 2015-2016 advocacy priorities. We'd love to hear from you about what issues you care the most about and why from the context of your local municipality or county. This will help us to decide where to invest our time and resources at the local level. The survey should only take 10 minutes, and your responses are completely anonymous. Only question #2 is required all other questions are optional.

You can only take the survey once and the deadline to submit your answers is Sept 18, 2015 at 11:59pm..

All NICUs (Neonatal Intensive Care Units) should be required to follow an adapted version of "the 10 steps" by 2027.

All hospitals should be baby-friendly designated or equivalent (ie follow "the 10 steps" including having a policy, placing the baby & mother skin to skin, having the baby "room in", not accepting free formula, etc) by 2025.

All hospitals should have an infant feeding policy by 2020.

Public contractors should receive additional points on their bids if they have mother-employee (including breastfeeding friendly) policies

Outreach and education on pay equity laws should be expanded.

All employers (not just those with 50 or more employees) should offer some form of PAID maternity leave

All employees (regardless of wage type or amount) should be eligible for one hour of paid sick time for every 40 hours worked (that's approx 6 days per year)

Unpaid maternity leave should be extended from 12 weeks to 1 full year

Employers should be required to follow pay equity laws (e.g. women/mothers should be paid the same as their male counterparts who perform the same work).

Employees should be eligible for unpaid family leave after 60 days of employment (instead of 12 months) regardless of position or salary

Employers who are not in compliance with breastpump use in the workplace statutes should be fined at least $1000

Child care facility staff should receive training in breastfeeding support in order to meet licensure requirements

All child care facilties should be 'baby-friendly' designated or equivalent (ie follow "the 10 steps" including having a policy, providing a comfortable place to pump and/or nurse for parents throughout the day, provide breastfeeding positive learning experiences for the children in their care, etc) by 2020.

Breastfeeding standards should be integrated into the statewide Quality Rating Improvement Systems.

Require that all schools that serve students of child bearing age provide on or near site childcare resources.

Require that all schools that serve students of child bearing age provide a clean space (other than a bathroom) and flexible break times to support pumping while mother students are separated from their children.

Require that all schools that serve students of childbearing age allow breastfeeding children on campus for breastfeeding sessions whenever possible.

Every military branch must have a policy that acknowledges that all breastfeeding mother military personnel need for a private space (not a restroom) and are to be authorized to take pumping breaks of 15-30 minutes every three to four hours.

Every military branch should provide career oriented officers and enlisted members a separation from Active Duty for up to two years to discharge parental responsibilities to care for newborn children (CNC).

Every military branch should have a policy that supports deferment from deployment of breastfeeding mothers for 2 years postpartum (as opposed to 6 months).

Incarcerated women at county jails (who are deemed non violent) should be given the option to housed with their children

Incarcerated women at county jails, who are separated from their children, should be supported in maintaining their milk supply

Low level drug offenses should be decriminalized so that mothers and children are not separated and breastfeeding can be sustained

Expressed milk from incarcerated mothers at county jails should be transported to off site children to ingest should they want it

Sex work should be decriminalized so that mothers and children are not separated and breastfeeding can be sustained

All shelters should be 'baby-friendly' designated or equivalent (ie follow "the 10 steps" including having a policy, providing a comfortable place to pump and/or nurse for parents throughout the day, provide breastfeeding positive learning experiences for the pregnant and expecting parents and the children housed in their facilities, etc) by 2025.

Homeless & emergency shelter staff should receive training in breastfeeding support in order to be eligible for licensure

Breastfeeding status should be taken into consideration during custody and visitation rulings, with maintaining breastfeeding for children 2 and under recognized as significantly important for the child's health and well being.

Upon request, breastfeeding mothers should be exempted from jury duty until breastfeeding has been discontinued.

Defendents and inmates who are breastfeeding should be provided breaks and appropriate space and equipment to express milk while in transit or waiting to be heard before a judge.

Big retailers and "dollar" stores should be required to remove consumer goods with toxic phthalates and flame retardants from store shelves as exposure to toxic chemicals for pregnant and breastfeeding women undermines the perception of the safety of breastfeeding
