TEQ LIP Physical and Emotional Health and Wellbeing Action Group

The purpose of this survey is to learn more about the availability and quality of services for LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual) newcomers, immigrants, and refugees and non-status residents living in Scarborough.

For the purpose of this survey immigrants, refugees and non-status residents will all be termed ‘newcomer’. We recognize that the identities of LGBTQIA+ newcomers are unique and complex due to multiple factors tied to social markers such as class, culture, gender identity, race, religious faith, sexual orientation, ability, and immigration status. LGBTQIA+ newcomers may face significant economic, social and political disadvantages and systemic barriers, particularly compared to LGBTQIA+ residents who are born in Canada, and compared to heterosexual and cisgender newcomers.

Our previous inquiries indicate that many LGBTQIA+ newcomers reside in Scarborough but do not often use services in Scarborough, preferring to go downtown. This could be a result of numerous interrelated variables; such as more centralized LGBTQIA+ services, or fear of being ‘outed’ while accessing services, or not knowing about services offered in Scarborough. The aim of this survey is to help the TEQ LIP and the Health and Wellbeing Action Group better understand the barriers and challenges LGBTQ+ newcomers face in accessing supports, identify what is helpful and what improvements to make.
