EOI Context

The Water and Energy for Food (WE4F) Challenge Fund is a joint initiative between the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the European Union (EU), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of the Netherlands, Sweden through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID, hereafter “the Founding Partners”. WE4F is a second-generation Grand Challenge for Development that continues and expands the work of Securing Water for Food (SWFF) and Powering Agriculture: An Energy Grand Challenge (PAEGC).
Through WE4F, the Founding Partners aim to expand the scale of innovations that impact the food and water sector, the food and energy sector or all three sectors of the nexus (food, water, energy) to increase the sustainability of agricultural food value chains, improve energy and water efficiency and improve climate-resilience in developing countries in accordance with the SDGs, with a particular focus on the poor and women.
To achieve this goal, the work of the Southern and Central Africa Regional Innovation Hub (S/C Africa RIH) must include partners from the private sector, non-governmental organizations, research institutions, and other stakeholders who share the common goal of increasing food production through the sustainable use of water and energy.
WE4F ultimately aims to uplift subsistence and smallholder farmers with a particular focus on women and youth, by supporting a variety of innovators that will indirectly impact the intended ultimate beneficiaries through the deployment of agricultural innovations.
