Homeshare Macarthur

Homeshare is an innovative program where people who have a spare room and need some help at home (such as older people, people with disabilities, and single parent families) are matched up with Homesharers who give 10 hours of housework, gardening, shopping or transport to appointments in return for rent-free accommodation. Homesharers are over 25 and may be mature students, mature-aged single people or workers new to the area or new to Australia.

The matching process is thorough, with the needs, preferences and habits of both parties considered thoughtfully. Householders and Homesharers get to know each other over time, sharing morning or afternoon tea first, then a longer meal the following week. Perhaps an overnight or weekend stay comes next. Finally, a trial period of a month is tested and monitored by both parties and the Homeshare Coordinator. Ongoing support is offered to help the match become sustainable.

Householders benefit by having someone at home for company and security at nights. Homesharers benefit by having affordable rent. Both parties benefit by having someone at home to care about.

If you are interested in Homeshare, then please take our anonymous survey. Macarthur Diversity Services Initiative is researching interest in Homeshare in the Macarthur-Campbelltown area.

If you are a service provider or community agency, please include comments about potential participants from your client group (including numbers) in the comments sections under each question.

* 1. Are you ageing or a single parent, or do you have a disability?

* 2. Do you have a spare room in your home?

* 3. Would you like to have someone (a Homesharer) live with you and provide company in the evenings and have the security of knowing someone else was there at night?

* 4. Would you like to have a Homesharer stay in your home rent free, in return for 10 hours of work such as housework, gardening, or taking you to appointments (NOT including personal care)?

* 5. All participants in Homeshare Macarthur would be carefully matched by a professional Program Coordinator and have Criminal History and Working With Children Checks.  Are there any other concerns which, if taken care of, would make you more likely to participate in Homeshare?

* 6. Are you over 25 and looking for economical accommodation?

* 7. Would you be home most nights to cook and eat with your Householder (Host) and be there for company and the reassurance that someone is there?

* 8. Would you be willing to give a Householder 10 hours of work per week in exchange for a rent-free room in their home?  (Examples of likely work include housework, gardening and taking someone to appointments.  Homeshare does NOT involve personal care.)

* 9. All participants in Homeshare Macarthur would be carefully matched by a professional Program Coordinator and have Criminal History and Working With Children Checks. Are there any other concerns which, if taken care of, would make you more likely to participate in Homeshare?

* 10. Would you like to be placed on an emailing list to receive information if Macarthur Homeshare gets up and running?
