Title of the Study: Factors Influencing Perceived Usability and Cognitive Load of Screen Reader Use among Adults with Visual Impairments during Web-Based Tasks
You are invited to participate in a research study entitled Factors Influencing Perceived Usability and Cognitive Load of Screen Reader Use among Adults with Visual Impairments during Web-Based Tasks. You were selected as a potential participant because you are an adult with a visual impairment who uses a screen reader. Please read this form and ask any questions you may have before deciding whether to participate.
This study is being conducted by Soumya Karnala, a doctoral candidate at the University of the Cumberlands (UC). The study will begin only after approval by the University of the Cumberlands Institutional Review Board.
Background Information:The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between perceived usability and cognitive workload experienced by adults with visual impairments while using screen readers to complete web-based tasks. Approximately 85–150 participants will be enrolled.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Have a visual impairment.
- Use a screen reader to access web-based content.
Procedures:If you agree to participate, you will complete an electronic informed consent, demographic questionnaire, several web-based tasks using your screen reader, the System Usability Scale (SUS), and the NASA Task Load Index (NASA‑TLX). Participation will take approximately 20–30 minutes.
Voluntary Nature of the Study:Your participation is strictly voluntary. Your decision whether or not to participate will not affect your current or future relationship with the University of the Cumberlands or any organization assisting with recruitment. You may withdraw at any time without penalty.
Risks and Benefits of Participation:There is no more than minimal risk associated with participating in this study. Some participants may experience temporary frustration, fatigue, or mild stress while completing the web-based tasks or questionnaires. You may skip any question you consider uncomfortable and may stop participation at any time. There is no direct individual benefit. The overall benefit is that the findings may improve website accessibility, usability, and inclusive web design for people with visual impairments.
Compensation:There will be no compensation provided for participation in this study.
Confidentiality:Any data gathered from your participation will be kept private. No names or directly identifying information will be collected. Responses will be coded using a participant ID. Data will be stored on password-protected systems accessible only to the researcher and faculty advisor. Results will be reported only in aggregate form. Research records will be securely maintained for three years after study completion and then permanently deleted.
