  • About NEWL
The Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy at UMass Boston is excited to host its second annual NEW Leadership® Massachusetts  (NEWL) Summer Institute, after its first successful year as the Commonwealth's NEWL organizing partner. The NEWL model was developed by the Center for American Women in Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University and has been running successfully for more than 20 years. This non-partisan program is designed to give undergraduate students the tools to become effective leaders in the political arena regardless of their academic interests or career path. No prior political or policy experience is necessary.
During the summer institute, students will meet women leaders from across the country, learn about women’s participation in American politics, and develop and practice leadership skills through panel discussions, workshops, and projects. After the summer institute, participants become part of NEWL’s national network of distinguished alumnae.  NEWL MA students will also be invited to participate in CWPPP and future NEWL follow-up events.

The NEW Leadership® MA Summer Institute will be held June 22-24, 2022:
  • Wed. June 22 & Thur. June 23 from 9 am to 1 pm ET virtual meetings on Zoom
  • Fri. June 24 from 9 am to 2 pm on the UMass Boston campus (overnight accommodation will be provided on the evening of 6/23 for non-local students).
Participants should be available to attend all the sessions. Over the three days, students will participate in a variety of programming sessions and exciting virtual or in person events and will also have access to online resources. Breaks will be scheduled throughout the course of each day.

There is no cost for students to participate in NEW Leadership®.

**Sending institutions that are able to are asked to partner with CWPPP by contributing $200 ($100 for community colleges) toward the cost of the program. A contribution from your institution is NOT required for you to attend NEWL. Students or institutions should contact NEWL-MA co-directors Dr. Laurie Nsiah-Jefferson and Muna Killingback at the email address with any questions or concerns whatsoever (subject line should be NEWL-MA).

The NEW Leadership® Massachusetts program is now open to both current undergraduate students and recent high school and college graduates who reside and/or study in Massachusetts.

CWPPP is committed to including students from diverse ethnic/racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities in each NEW Leadership® program. To achieve a diverse cohort, we strongly encourage women of color, non-traditional college women, students who may be gender non-conforming, nonbinary, or transgender, and students majoring in fields outside of political science to apply.

Students from other states in the NEW Leadership® National Network are encouraged to apply with their state’s program. A list of NEW Leadership® National Network partner programs in each state and their contact information can be found here
