Are you living with an arrhythmia (heart rhythm disorder)? Help Us Understand High Altitude Travel

If you have an arrhythmia and love the idea of a trekking holiday, a ski trip, or a mountain adventure, you may have come up against the same frustrating question as many others: is it safe for you to travel to high altitudes?

At the moment, doctors have very little real-world evidence about how heart rhythm conditions are affected by altitude above 2,500m — roughly the height of many ski resorts and popular trekking routes. Because of this gap, some patients are cautiously advised against travel that they might have managed perfectly well, while others may be underestimating the risks. Either way, decisions are often being made without the data to back them up.

A new international registry has been set up by Dr P Hayle, a consultant cardiologist at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, UK. It aims to build the largest real-world collection of data on people with heart conditions, including arrhythmias, who travel to altitude — so that future advice can be based on evidence rather than guesswork: Could this be you?

You are invited to participate in a brief, secure online questionnaire both before and after your travels to share your experiences.
