Understanding language knowledge, use and maintenance
amongst the Italians in Australia

We are pleased to invite you to participate in a research project

The study is conducted by Prof. John Hajek and Dr Francesco Goglia, researchers at the University of Melbourne.

Aims of the study:
The purpose of the study is to collect data from members of the Italian community in Melbourne, Australia. This information will be used to investigate the knowledge and use of different languages by this community. It is designed to help researchers better understand the Italian community in Australia. This research has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee at the University of Melbourne.

How to participate in the study
If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire. By completing the questionnaire - either in printed or electronic form - you give your consent to participating in the project. We may also ask you to complete an oral or written interview - if we need to clarify any answers to the questionnaire.

Completion of the questionnaire should not take more than twenty-thirty minutes. The interview task, if required, should not take more than sixty minutes.

Conditions of participation:
Your participation in this study is strictly voluntary and you are free to withdraw your consent and any unprocessed data at any time.
With your permission, your answers will be saved as coded anonymous data. The research data will be stored in a secure location at School of Languages and Linguistics, The University of Melbourne. Results from the study will be used to prepare written publications and be presented at conferences during and after the project. Participants’ names will not appear in any form.

Confidentiality of the data:
Your identity and information are confidential. In order to protect your identity as much as possible at all times, you will be assigned a unique code in an effort to protect your identity.
