National Advisory Board Purpose and Responsibilities

Thank you for your interest in serving on the Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs National Advisory Board (CYSHCN NAB). The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), in partnership with the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health, created the CYSHCN NAB to help improve the system of services for CYSHCN and their families.

We are seeking applicants with a strong interest and experience in transforming systems of care for CYSHCN and their families. Current NAB members have experience with and/or represent sectors who serve and support CYSHCN, such as payers, health care practitioners, patients/families, health information technology, research/quality assurance, government/policy, mental health, juvenile justice/foster care, education, and workforce.

NAB membership applications will be reviewed by AAP staff, Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health staff, and NAB Co-Chairs to determine the specific expertise the applicant will bring to the NAB. Applicants will receive an email from an AAP staff person once the application has been reviewed and a decision has been made.

Purpose and Goals
The purpose of the NAB is to provide guidance to the field by identifying priorities, actions, and benchmarks that will improve the systems on which the health and well-being of CYSHCN and their families depend.

The goals of the NAB are to:
  • Identify priorities and related actions that will improve outcomes for CYSHCN and their families.
  • Provide guidance on policies whose adoption would encourage and facilitate coordination of services for CYSHCN and their families.
  • Ensure that the perspectives of individuals with lived experience, including family members, youth, and young adults guide the work of the NAB.
