Course Title:  Updates in Rules for Special Inspections Effective March 7, 2018  - 1 PDH 

Speaker:  Lawrence J. O'Connor, P.E., LS, F. NSPE.

This presentation is an overview or a prelude to a 2-Day IAS training seminar for Special Inspection Agencies and will provide an overview of some of the changes made to the requirements and practice of Special Inspectors as well as discuss the affected rules of Chapter 17 of the New York City Building Code.
Topics to be covered include changes to Special Inspections rules including qualifications of inspectors, frequency of inspections, changes to local laws etc. Participants will learn about the sequence and organization of the SI Rule, differences between the prior and current rules, discuss a summary of the impact of the changes in various SI rules.

The presentation will also provide an overview of some of the affected Special Inspections requirements by the 2014 New York City Construction Code.  Discussion topics will include, the criteria and classification of Special Inspections, some of the differences between inspection requirements, summary of some of the code sections impacted by the changes in SI rules, and a brief overview of the process of becoming an Accredited Special Inspection Agency in 2018.
Mr. O'Connor is the New York Representative and East Coast Manager for the International Accreditation Service, Inc. performing quality assessments for Accreditation of Special Inspection Agencies, Testing Laboratories, Inspection Agencies, Product Certification Agencies, Building Departments and Calibration Labs to international standards in the New York/Philadelphia regions and throughout the US, Canada, the Middle East, Europe and Central America. Prior to that, Mr. O'Connor was employed as the Deputy Chief of Bridge, Highway and Rail Division at McLaren Engineering Group as well as a Director in the Office of Design (CE 4) at the New York Thruway Authority, a Quality Assurance Engineer for the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation, a Senior Civil Engineer for the City of Schenectady, New York and a junior Civil Engineer for the New York State Department of Transportation.

The purpose of this 1-Hr. presentation is to provide an understanding of the benefits of high efficiency gas water heaters: tank and tankless Commercial Applications.  Upon completion of the presentation participants should be able to understand the principals of optimizing the design and performance of commercial water heater systems and understand the difference between standard and high efficiency gas water heaters.

Objective:  To understand the benefits of high efficiency gas water heaters and how to convert from standard to high efficiency.  Also discussed are methods for estimating hot water demands, best plumbing and venting principles and discussion of advancing technology for water heaters.

Learning Objectives:
1.  Understand the difference between standard efficiency and high efficiency water heaters.
2.  Know the benefits and requirements of high efficiency water heaters.
3.  Understand how to convert from existing standard gas to high efficiency.
4.  Principals of performing sizing for both tank and tankless high efficiency water heaters.
5.  Understand good practices of plumbing multiple water heaters together.
6.  Understand the best practices of venting multiple tankless Units together.
7.  Have a basic understanding of Building Management Systems (BMS).
8.  Learn about new and upcoming technologies in water heating.
