Jocelyn Andersen and I are writing a book, together, on why we do not have an Equal Rights Amendment. An Amendment is needed because when it was first suggested to include women in our Constitution--at the time it was originally written--the idea was soundly shot down. As a result, until women received the right to vote in the 1920's, only male citizens enjoyed the protection of the United States Constitution.
To date, the right to vote is still the only Constitutional protection women have.
Jocelyn is a Conservative Christian. I am an Independent Moderate. The idea to write a book together came from the realization that it was possible to unite the Right, the Middle, and the Left together in support of this one thing--the Equal Rights Amendment.
This will harm no one and benefit everyone--both women and men--of any political persuasion.
We are asking all women and men who support equal rights (which are human rights) to refrain from using divisive language when advocating for ERA, and to stop using the issue of ERA to promote side issues which tend to be divisive, such as reproductive rights and gay rights--which the Amendment would not regulate, and which only serves to divide what could be a huge support base for ERA.
We support the Right of Free Speech and freedom of conscience to all Americans, and would never undermine the Right of any American to advocate, protest, or by any peaceful means, support any issue their conscience dictates. But we are calling attention to the fact that blending the issue of ERA with other issues (that it would not address in any case) has only had the adverse effect of of dividing the support base and has hindered the passage of this much needed Constitutional Amendment.
We are asking all supporters of ERA, to please allow it to be a "stand alone" issue. We have created a hashtag for #ERAonly. And we are asking all who would like to join with us in advocating for the Equal Rights Amendment, as a stand alone issue, to begin using the hashtag.
Andersen and I believe that supporting #ERAonly would have the effect of opening was has for too long been a closed subject for many and for bringing together all who believe in equality and human rights for everyone.
We believe that with #ERAonly, we can get this thing passed.
That is our opinion. What do you think?
