1. Introduction to survey

The process of application and selection for neurosurgery fellowships remains a heterogeneous and controversial topic. Attached is a survey aimed understanding views and opinions regarding this topic. Applicants have expressed concern that the fellowship selection process across various neurosurgical subspecialties is inconsistent. For example, fellowship programs in the same subspecialty area may have application deadlines one or two years apart or no clearly transparent time deadlines at all. In addition, fellowship agreements between candidates and programs are often not binding. Candidates have reported instances of programs retracting offers without due cause, and programs have reported instances of candidates who broke their fellowship agreements.

All responses will be anonymous and published in aggregate in order to better inform fellowship and program directors, residents, and national organizations.

This survey is specifically designed for fellowship directors, early faculty/residents who have applied for a post-graduate fellowship, OR neurosurgical pediatric fellows. The survey will take <10 minutes to complete.

This survey is being conducted on behalf of the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies after passage of resolution X - Fall 2017.
