"Lafayette, Name that Neighborhood!" Community Contest: Grand Prize

Lafayette, name that neighborhood!

We have asked the Lafayette community to help us name the planned neighborhood of affordable workforce homes at the intersection of East Emma Street and 120th in east Lafayette.

We had a large number of submissions and today, three wonderful finalists remain! Please rank the names below, with #1 as your favorite and #3 as your least favorite.

* 1. Rank the possible names for the new affordable neighborhood of workforce housing in Lafayette.

Abeytas Haven | The Abeytas, whose history in Colorado goes back 150 years, are one of Lafayette’s oldest Hispanic families. The Hispanic community has been and will always be an integral part of the community.

Comunidad Unida | "The Lafayette community is reflected in this name because translated in English it is“United Community”, which we are. Growing up I lived next to one type of race, Latinos. I hung out with another, white. I did not feel as a Mexican American that my two races could ever be in unity. Now I learned how to factor more than just myself living in Lafayette. I have heard over and over our younger generation is becoming more diverse and united. I love to live in a community where African Americans, Whites, Latinos, and all other ethnicities and races can be exposed to one another; and learned how to live in unity with people who are unique in there own way. I chose to go with a Spanish name because I see a theme here in Lafayette and that is Spanish being incorporated into business names like , La Clinica. Also Alicia Sanchez, a Latina woman was honored in such a great community by naming a wonderful school after her. Let’s keep the love going for our Latino community, one that has been under fire recently. Let’s name the new community what it really is, un comunidad unida."

Willoughby Corner | "My recommendation is based on Doug Conarroe's information about the historic connection of the property as the Willoughby coal mine. Amid the violent clashes over unionization of mine workers during the early 1900's that touched Lafayette's mines as well as the better-known clashes in southern Colorado, The American Fuel company, owner of the Willoughby mine, supported its workers. As I pondered the second word, "corner" came to mind as the perfect description of this community that is indeed a corner, bounded by three different uses, Waneka's wheat fields, a light industrial area, and the semi-rural Flagg Drive community. "
