Study Information and Consent

Invitation

As a Midwife, you are invited to take part in this study. Before you decide, it is important that you understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. The below information tells you a little bit about the purpose, risks, and benefits of this research study. If you agree to take part, we will ask you to give consent by simply clicking on the ‘Next’ button at the end of the page. If there is anything that you are not clear about, we will be happy to explain it to you. Please take as much time as you need to read this information. You should only consent to participate in this study when you feel you understand what is being asked of you, and you have had enough time to think about your decision.

Purpose of the Study

This study is concerned with midwives’ conversations about healthy lifestyles. The purpose of the study is to identify factors which hinder (barriers) or helps (facilitate) qualified and student midwives in their discussion about healthy lifestyle decisions with overweight and obese pregnant women. This study hopes to explore possible differences in the barriers and facilitators between qualified and student midwives in Ireland.
The questionnaire will take approximately 10 minutes.
It is circulated with the support of relevant Midwifery schools and professional associations to eligible midwives.
If you are over 18 years of age and a qualified or student midwife, working with pregnant women in Ireland, your views and experiences will be very useful in this study.
The study requires approximately 300 midwives (150 qualified midwives and 150 student midwives) to complete the questionnaire.
Taking Part – What it Involves

Do I have to take part?
It is up to you to decide whether to take part or not. If you do decide to take part, your consent must be given electronically by simply clicking ‘Next’ at the end of this form. You will then be redirected to the questionnaire. If you decide to take part, you are still free to withdraw at any time and without giving a reason. A decision to withdraw at any time, or a decision not to take part, will not affect your rights in any way.
It is important that you know that your responses and answers in the questionnaire will be completely anonymous and your name or contact details are not needed.
If you wish to be contacted about the results of the research, you can leave your email address in the space provided at the bottom of this page.
If you wish to be in the draw for one of two €50 ‘One4All’ shopping vouchers, you can choose to give your email address in the relevant space provided at the bottom of this page. One lucky qualified midwife and one student midwife will each win a €50 ‘One4All’ shopping voucher. Your anonymity will still be protected.
What to expect.
The questionnaire will consist of 3 sections. The first section will simply ask for information about the frequency of healthy lifestyle discussions. In the second section, you will be asked to rate each question by either selecting from ‘strongly agree', 'agree', 'neither agree or 'disagree', 'disagree' or 'strongly disagree'. The third section will ask you to share some general information about yourself, for example, your gender, training and work experience. This section will also offer an opportunity to leave professional feedback and any additional comments.
There are no right or wrong answers, it is your views, beliefs, and opinions that we are interested in.
Some of the questions may seem repetitive but they are all subtly different and your patience in answering them all will improve the results.
Similarly, you may feel that the questions are not relevant to your area of work, however, your opinions and views are still important, and we’d like to know them. The questionnaire will be anonymous and confidential, and individuals cannot be identified from responses.
Finally, once you have completed the questionnaire, it will be assumed that you have given consent to have your responses analysed and used (anonymously), as part of research reports, publications and the researcher, Lise-Marie du Preez’s thesis.
How long will my part in the study last?
The questionnaire will last approximately 10 minutes.
